Yes. All CDL applicants must pass a DOT physical exam. You must submit your Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC) to the Texas DPS to self-certify your medical status.

You must pass the DPS written knowledge exams (General Knowledge, Air Brakes, Combination) to get your permit. Afterward, you must pass the 3-part Skills Test: Pre-trip Inspection, Basic Vehicle Control, and On-Road Driving.

The Texas DPS will disqualify applicants with certain felony convictions, active license suspensions, or major traffic violations like DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) or leaving the scene of an accident.
