California CDL Requirements

Essential requirements to get your CDL license

You can obtain a California CDL at age 18 for intrastate driving. However, the California DMV and federal laws strictly require drivers to be 21+ for interstate commerce or to haul hazmat/passengers.

Yes. You must have a valid California Class C driver's license. The DMV will review your driving history for points or suspensions before allowing you to take the written CLP test.

Yes. You must submit a Medical Examination Report (MER) Form MCSA-5875 and a Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC) Form MCSA-5876 to the DMV to certify your physical qualification.

You must pass the written knowledge test to get your permit. For the license, you must pass the Vehicle Inspection, Basic Control Skills, and Road Test at a DMV Commercial Driving Test Center.

The California DMV will deny a CDL for convictions of DUI, hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter, or having too many points on your driving record (Negligent Operator Treatment System).
