Essential requirements to get your CDL license

You can obtain a CDL at age 18 for intrastate driving within New Jersey. Under federal rules enforced by the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC), you must be 21 to drive interstate or transport hazardous materials.

Yes. You must hold a valid New Jersey basic driver's license. The Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) requires your driving record to be clear of suspensions before issuing a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP).

Yes. All applicants must pass a DOT physical and submit a valid Medical Examiner's Certificate to the MVC. You must also self-certify your driving category when you apply.

You must pass the MVC written knowledge exams to get your permit. After holding the CLP, you must pass the 3-part skills test: Pre-trip Inspection, Basic Control Skills, and the On-Road Driving test.

The MVC will disqualify applicants for DUI/DWI convictions, refusing a chemical test, leaving the scene of an accident, or using a vehicle in the commission of a felony.
