Florida CDL Requirements

Essential requirements to get your CDL license

Yes. The FLHSMV allows drivers as young as 18 to hold a Class A or B CDL for routes strictly within Florida. To drive commercially across state lines (e.g., into Georgia), you must be at least 21.

You must possess a valid, non-commercial Florida Class E driver's license. You will need to present this to the Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) office when applying for your permit.

Absolutely. You cannot obtain a CDL without a valid medical card from a certified examiner. This information will be linked to your driving record in the FLHSMV database.

After holding your CLP for 14 days, you must pass the three-part skills test administered by a third-party tester or the FLHSMV: Pre-trip inspection, backing maneuvers, and road test.

Florida has strict rules. A DUI conviction, refusing a sobriety test, using a vehicle in the commission of a felony, or driving with a suspended license can permanently or temporarily disqualify you from holding a CDL.

*Requirements based on Florida FLHSMV regulations as of 2026.
